Dear 8th Grade Families,

In order to make 8th grade promotion run smoothly and to make it an enjoyable experience for all students and their guests, please read and adhere to the following guidelines:

8th grade promotion will begin at 9:30 a.m. Guests should park in the neighborhood and may enter the promotion area through any gate. There is no saving of seats unless prior arrangements have been made. Elderly guests or guests with medical needs have first priority under the shaded structures toward the rear of the promotion area.

At 9:00 a.m., 8th Grade students should report to the middle school area to line up. All students need to be lined up and ready to march by 9:15 a.m.

Siblings who attend Cubberley should come on campus with their families and leave campus with their families. The office will not be calling students out of class to attend promotion.

Cell phones should be placed on silent during the ceremony.

Please do not block the view of other people during the ceremony. When a parent attends their child’s promotion, the most important part of the ceremony is for them to see their child walk across the stage and be recognized by name. Therefore, you should remain seated during the ceremony and should be mindful of those behind you when taking photographs or video.

No balloons, large signs, or umbrellas are allowed in the seating area. Please leave balloons in your car until after the ceremony or secure them to the back of the lunch bench area.

There is no standing in the aisles or walking to the front of the student section to take pictures or to hand items to the promoting students.

Do not bring air horns or any other noisemakers. If you are screaming or making unnecessary noise, others will have a difficult time hearing their students’ names and their messages.

All small guests should be supervised by their families and should not be unsupervised during the ceremony. During the pledge, national anthem, speeches, musical performances, etc… there should be no talking.

Please do not leave water bottles, programs, etc… in the seating area.

Please pass this information on to others who are attending the ceremony with you.

We would like to congratulate all of our Cubberley 8th graders and we wish them the best of luck in high school. Promotion packages should be picked up in the cafeteria by the graduates at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Thank you,

Mrs. Imbroane

Dear Cubberley Families,

Yesterday afternoon at approximately 3:30 p.m. one of our 7th grade students was assaulted and robbed on Studebaker and Mezzanine as he was walking home from school. The assailant was an adult male Hispanic with facial tattoos. He was driving a Black Acura 4-door vehicle from the late 80s or early 90s..

Thankfully, our student is okay.

Please speak with your students about exercising caution when walking home and please make sure they are walking in pairs or groups. If you were in the area or witnessed the incident, please contact Long Beach Police Department.

Dear Students and Families,

As we head into the last quarter of the school year, this is a reminder that Cubberley is a "No-Slur" School.

Cubberley is a safe, open learning environment free of slurs. There will be no insults related to ability, appearance, culture, gender, home language, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or social class tolerated here. Taunting or teasing others hurts our classmates, tears us apart, and erodes our school climate.

Our character trait for March and April is CARING.

Be kind.

Be compassionate and show you care.

Express gratitude.

Forgive others.

Help people in need.

Be charitable and altruistic.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Here are a few reminders regarding student drop off and pick up. It is important that we all work together to ensure the safety of all students:

Pets - Pets are not allowed on or around campus while students are present. Parents are personally liable if their pet gets too excited and bites or nips at a child, and additionally, Animal Control could seize your pet. If you are walking your pet and children to or from school, please stay on the sidewalk across from the school.

Double Parking - Parents/guardians should refrain from double parking when dropping off or picking up students. This is a safety

hazard for our families and neighbors.

Thank you for your continued support of Cubberley School.

Hello Eighth Grade Families,

The deadline to complete your enrollment into the pathway of your choice for high school on ParentVue is 11:59pm, tomorrow night, March 1, 2017.

Failure to do so by the deadline will result in the loss of the acceptance, and your student will be assigned to a school and a pathway in the district where there is space available.

To set your intent, you can do it one of three ways:

  1. Log into ParentVue, click on “School of Choice”, click on the (blue) intend button next to the pathway you prefer, and then click on the (brown) certify button at the bottom of the page. When this is done, the screen will be green and you will get a confirmation email. Keep this email for your records.
  2.
  3. You can visit your middle school or K8 Office and ask for assistance from the counseling staff, who will help you and print a confirmation page for you.

  1. You can call the Choice Helpline at (562)997-8306, or visit Team High School Choice at 1515 Hughes Way, Third Floor, where our team will be happy to assist you in setting your intention and printing your confirmation. We will only be available until 4:40pm tomorrow afternoon, as our building closes for the day.

Regardless of which option you choose, it is very important that you not miss this deadline. Even if you are submitting an appeal for a different program, set an intent to one of your selected programs while we are reviewing the appeals. The intention set will have no effect on any appeal decision.

Please double check that you have clicked on both the blue “intend” button to the right of your preferred pathway, and the brown “certify” button at the bottom of the page to complete the process. You will receive an email confirmation. Please keep this for your records as proof of completion.

We thank you for your attention to this matter, and wish you and your family a pleasant evening.

Hello Eighth Grade Students and Families,

Results for this year's School of Choice applications for high school pathways will be available for you to review this Friday, February 17, 2017, after 5:00pm.

To see your results, log into ParentVue and select the "School of Choice" tab on the left, then follow the links.

To complete the process and confirm your selection, you must click on the "set intent" button to the right of the one pathway you are selecting, then click on the "certify" button at the bottom of the screen. When the process is complete, you will receive an email confirmation of your intent.

This must be done by the deadline, 11:59pm on March 1, 2017. Failure to do this final step will result in the loss of your acceptance to that pathway.

If you need assistance, you can find it in three places:

               1. Your LBUSD Middle School or K8 counselor.

               2. The Choice Helpline (562) 997-8306

               3. The High School Choice Office - 1515 Hughes Way

Third Floor (Open from 8:00am - 4:30pm, Monday

                        through Friday).

We thank you for your patience and congratulate the upcoming class of 2021 in taking the next step towards promotion to high school!

Dear Cubberley Families,

Recently, students have been walking around with containers of slime that they have made at home. Some students are even selling it on campus. Students should keep their slime at home as it is a distraction to the learning environment. The sale of unauthorized items is prohibited at school. Any slime seen on campus will be confiscated and thrown away. If you know your child is making slime, please remind them that they are to play with it at home only.

Thank you,

Mrs. Imbroane

Dear Parents/Guardian:

This school year, we have had a few instances of middle school students logging on to district network accounts that do not belong to them. I am attaching the Acceptable Use of Technology Policy that the district has provided to all students. The first time any student logs into the district network, this policy pops up and each student is asked to read and acknowledge the policy. Teachers have been encouraged to remind students of this policy when they work in our school labs. Specifically, page 2, number 5 discusses accessing another individual’s materials, information, or files without permission. Parents can help by reviewing this policy at home with your students and reminding them that the policy extends to home computer use and personal devices as well as district computers.

Thank you,

Mrs. Imbroane

Good Morning Cubberley Families:

The window for the district CORE Survey is now officially open and we are hoping you will take a few moments to complete the survey for Cubberley. One parent/guardian per student should respond. Your responses are important to us as they help make up the overall culture and climate score for Cubberley's School Quality Improvement Index. In addition, your feedback helps our staff and School Site Council focus on areas of needed improvement. To take the survey, please log in to ParentVue or click the link that was sent to your personal e-mail last Thursday from Panorama Education. You will get an e-mail every Thursday until the survey window closes on February 21st.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

Dear Cubberley Students and Families,

Last week we had several pizza deliveries and drop offs to campus. We cannot continue to accept pizza for distribution to students at lunch as it is a disruption to both the office and the classrooms.

As outlined in the parent handbook and student planner, parents are not permitted to send refreshments to school for distribution to students during the school day. Parents may, however, bring lunch to be given to their own student. Those lunches should be placed on the side counter in the office for student pick up during their lunch time. There should be no unsupervised pizza parties, cupcakes, etc... in the lunch area. In addition, flowers, balloons, gifts, etc... should not be delivered to school.

We gladly celebrate and support authorized school parties hosted by the classroom teacher, the ASB, the PTA, and/or room parents. We welcome your donations and your personal involvement in these school activities.

Thank you for your support.

Good Morning Eighth Grade Families,

As we are nearing the start of the High School Choice Online Application Window, which begins on December 6, 2016, we want to remind all families to double check their address that we have on record.

If you log in to ParentVue, and find your address is incorrect, or outdated, you have until November 18, 2016, to update the record for it to be reflected on this year's application.

All address changes must be made in person at your middle or K-8 school, and will require your identification and two proofs of residency at the new address.

Any changes after November 18, will be amended in the computer, but will not be considered for school of choice and residential high school priority for this year's selection.

If you have questions, please see your middle school or K8 counselor, or call the Choice Helpline at (562) 997-8306.

Good Morning Eighth Grade Families,

This is a reminder that our Shadow Day Reservation System will be open for shadow requests until Wednesday, November 16, 2016. After that date, no further requests will be accepted.

Any current eighth grade student can request up to two shadow experiences using the link below. Shadow Days are activities where eighth grade students attend school for a full or part day at a participating high school. Students will participate in pathway lessons and experience what it is like to be a high school student on that campus.

The absence from the middle school is counted as a school-based activity, similar to a field trip. Parents are responsible for transporting their student to and from the high school.

To reserve a space, please use the link below.

If you have already made a reservation, the high schools will be in contact with you as their shadow dates draw near. Contact information for the High School Coordinators can be found on our High School Choice website.

If you need assistance, please visit your Middle School Counselor or call the Choice Helpline at (562)997-8306.

Please join us at 5:30pm in the library on Thursday, November 17th for the first session of this year’s Cubberley Parent Education Series (CPES) on Social Media: Kids & Teens And Online Safety. Do you ever feel like your kids know more about technology than you do? Or that you’re not quite sure what the apps on their phones, tablets, and computers do? You’re not alone! In this one hour session, we’ll explore and discuss tools and strategies for helping kids engage in social media in ways that are safe, respectful, and fun. We’ll offer practical tips, tools, and strategies for how to set and maintain safe boundaries for online activities, as well as ways to nurture strong family communication and help kids responsibly engaging in online communities via social media.

Conveniently, each CPES session this year will be right before the PTA meeting, to help busy parents make the most of their on-campus time. Light refreshments will be served at the CPES meeting. In addition, pizza and drinks will be offered at the PTA meeting.

Please RSVP your interest in attending Social Media: Kids & Teens And Online Safety to Leah Macpherson at leahmacpherson@me.com. Each CPES session is created for parents, but kids and teens are always welcome to attend.  We look forward to seeing you and exploring issues that are important to Cubberely families.

Cubberley Families:

This month's character pillar is RESPECT. Cubs are encouraged to:

Treat others with respect; be tolerant and accepting of differences; use good manners, not bad language; be considerate of the feelings of others; don't threaten, hit, or hurt anyone; deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements.

Please discuss respect with your children this month.

Let's all work on being more respectful toward each other.

September 21, 2016

I am pleased to invite students in grades 8-12 who reside or attend schools located in the 47th Congressional district to participate in the Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, “The House STEM App Challenge.” It is designed to engage student’s creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields.

This competition is a nationwide event that allows students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Students must provide a 3-minute video demo explaining their app and what they learned through the process.

The App Challenge registration for entries has officially begun and will be closed November 2, 2016 at 9:00 AM PST. The submitted apps will be judged by an appointed panel of individuals within the academic, software and entrepreneurial fields. Eligibility and registration details on the STEM Challenge are available on Congressional App Challenge website: http://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/

Our winning student’s app will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website (www.House.gov) and on display in an exhibit in the U.S. Capitol.

I hope your students will participate in this exciting event. I look forward to seeing the apps they create. For any questions, please feel free to contact Helene Ansel in my District Office at (562) 436-3828 or via email at Helene.Ansel@mail.house.gov

Sincerely,

Alan S. Lowenthal
Member of Congress

Dear Students and Parents:

We are off to a great start to the year. Students have been working hard in the classroom and have exhibited positive behavior on the playground.

As a reminder, students who are not involved in a supervised after school activity on campus need to leave campus directly after school.

Students who walk or ride their bikes/skateboards/scooters home should proceed home directly after school if they are not in a school-sponsored activity on campus.

Elementary students who are waiting for middle school siblings should wait for them on the playground.

High school students who are waiting for their siblings should wait on the auditorium steps.

High School students should not be on the Cubberley campus unless they are engaged in an activity under the supervision of an adult on campus.

The playground is open for students who are waiting to be picked up. All students should be picked up by 4:00.

Please remind your students of these guidelines if they pertain to your family.

Thank you,

Mrs. Imbroane
